Risk:
Risk is your church’s expose to specific hazards. Risk is determined by (1) assessing the likelihood (L) or threat of the risk occurring, (2) determining what vulnerabilities (V) or system weaknesses exist, and (3) estimating the potential impact or consequence (C) if the risk were to occur.

Here’s Why This is Important to Churches:
There’s a lot of inexperience and uncertainty when it comes to security and houses of worship. In my experience, churches spend a majority of their resources on attempting to mitigate low likelihood events to include active assailants. Please don’t misunderstand me- we need to address the active assailant threat in our Physical Security Assessments (PSAs) and our Emergency Action Plans (EAPs); however, we also need to identify and address the risks that are most likely to occur, and statistically a medical event, a misplaced child, a weather event, or unusual activity top the list as having a high likelihood or frequency.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the top three leading causes of death in the U.S. are heart disease, cancer, and accidents, not active assailants. How does your PSA and EAP currently address these risks?
